  • Powder Preparation: Aluminum nitride ceramic powder is typically prepared through a process called direct nitridation. Aluminum powder is reacted with nitrogen gas at high temperatures to form aluminum nitride powder. The powder is then milled and sieved to achieve the desired particle size distribution.
  • Substrate Forming: There are several techniques for forming AlN ceramic substrates:
  • Tape Casting: Tape casting is a common method for producing ceramic substrates. In this process, the AlN ceramic powder is mixed with a binder and solvent to form a slurry. The slurry is then cast onto a flat surface and dried to form a green sheet. The green sheet is then cut into the desired shape and size.
  • Hot Pressing: Hot pressing is another method used to form AlN ceramic substrates. The AlN powder is mixed with a small amount of binder material, such as boron nitride, to aid in the consolidation process. The mixture is then subjected to high temperature and pressure to facilitate sintering and densification.
  • Sintering: Sintering is a critical step in the manufacturing process of AlN ceramic substrates. The formed substrates are heated to high temperatures in a controlled atmosphere to promote bonding and densification. This process enhances the mechanical strength and thermal conductivity of the substrates.
  • Machining and Finishing: After sintering, the AlN ceramic substrates may undergo machining operations to achieve the desired dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish. Common machining techniques include cutting, drilling, grinding, or diamond machining. Surface treatments such as polishing or metallization may also be applied for specific requirements.
  • Inspection and Quality Control: The machined AlN ceramic substrates undergo thorough inspection to ensure they meet the required specifications. Dimensional measurements, surface quality assessment, and other quality control techniques are employed to verify the integrity and performance of the substrates.
